ABSTRACT (EN)

This paper describes the relationship between the predictability of working hours and the happiness of Dutch employees between 2006 and 2010, using the WageIndicator dataset. Happiness was measured as overall enjoyment of life-as-a-whole. Much predictability means knowing the working hours at least one month in advance while less predictability means knowing the working hours at best one week in advance. Less predictability influences happiness negatively while much predictability increases the happiness. This is strongest among the following categories of employees: female, 15-31 year-old, living with a partner, working twenty till fourty hours a week and working in the catering industry. The presence of children at home does not affect the relation between happiness and predictability of working hours.

 

ABSTRACT (NL)

Dit artikel beschrijft de relatie tussen voorspelbaarheid van arbeidstijdenlocaties op het geluksgevoel van Nederlandse werkenden tussen 2006-2010, met behulp van de WageIndicator. Geluk is gemeten als de subjectieve waardering van het leven als geheel. De voorspelbaarheid houdt in hoelang van tevoren werkenden de arbeidstijdenlocaties weten. Veel voorspelbaarheid houdt in dat de werkenden minstens één maand van tevoren de arbeidstijdenlocaties weten, terwijl weinig voorspelbaarheid hoogstens één week van tevoren betekent. Weinig voorspelbaarheid heeft negatieve invloed en veel voorspelbaarheid positieve invloed op het geluksgevoel. Dit effect is het sterkst bij de volgende categorieën werkenden: vrouwen, 15-31 jarigen, partner in huishouden, twintig tot veertig uur per week werken en werken in de horecasector. Aanwezigheid van kinderen in huishoudens heeft geen invloed op de veronderstelde relatie.
