ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
Over the past decade, global discussions about the definition of platform work and the status of platform workers have progressed, accompanied by initiatives and policies aimed at regulating rights and responsibilities in the platform economy. However, the Western Balkans region remains behind in these developments. Platform workers in this region continue to face a lack of proper recognition and regulation in labor markets, which worsens their precarious conditions, especially in (semi-)peripheral countries. This vulnerable position has led to a growing wave of labor protests, as workers push for better conditions and recognition of their rights, as well as efforts to organize through either dedicated platform worker associations or existing unions.
The conference on "Platform Work and Workers' Collective Action and Organisation" focussed on key issues and, where appropriate, concrete examples, including the challenges of platform work, the rights and status of platform workers, representation and organisation of platform workers and more.
The conference was part of the Platform Work Inclusion Living Lab (P-WILL) COST Action, supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology), an initiative that promotes research and innovation networks across Europe.
ABOUT THE PRESENTATION
WageIndicator, together with the Central European Labour Studies Institute, CELSI, presented a case study introducing the concept and methodology of the 'Living Tariff' - an innovative approach specifically for gig workers. The Living Tariff extends and tailors the concept of Living Wages to the gig economy, accounting for costs and working conditions faced by these workers.
